Junior High

The Junior High is designed to build and emphasize academic skills in a highly structured environment where the student can more easily make the transition from the self-contained classroom-based Elementary School to having several teachers for different academic subjects.  Organizational strategies and study skills are emphasized in each class, along with the content presented. Weekly study skills classes focus on individual strategies for successful studying.

Through small classes and highly individualized attention, the students gain a sense of belonging to a group.  As they recognize and appreciate their own abilities and special talents, they also learn more about their disabilities and the learning methods that work for them.  The students learn to assume responsibility for their schoolwork, to deal appropriately with changing classes, classmates and teachers, and to develop skills for working in groups.  Since a number of our students, although very bright, are immature in the social area, the staff emphasizes the fourth R--Relationships.  Students are expected to know or learn the appropriate behavior, not just in a classroom, but also in regard to the opposite sex and older and younger members of the community.

JUNIOR HIGH GROUPS AND ACTIVITIES

Some of the Junior High Groups and Activities, which are planned to help develop social skills, self-confidence and self-advocacy include:

Advisory Groups Students will be put into Advisory Groups and each student will be matched with a Junior High faculty advisor who will monitor the progress of his/her student advisee throughout  the year.
Trips Schoolwide trips help build confidence and social skills and introduce student to appropriate risk taking.
Community Service Involving all students in community service projects is an important focus of the junior high

Junior High students need to come to school prepared every day. Students should have a loose-leaf notebook with pocket subject dividers, notebook paper and a place to keep their pencils, erasers, pens and calculators.  Other strategies for helping organizational skills will be implemented by the teachers.
